Greece: Conscientious objectors in prison for refusing to serve in the army

Imprisonment of eight prisoners of conscience: Christos Thanos, Giannis Kovousoglou, Timotheos Kordas, Christos Koromilas, Michalis Mathioudakis, Michalis Mavrelis, Michalis Liotsakis and Thomas Bokolas: The above men were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment on 25 November 1996 for refusing to perform military service. As Jehovah’s Witnesses they are opposed to performing any kind of military service. As conscientious objectors and prisoners of conscience Amnesty International is calling for their immediate and unconditional release. They are currently serving their sentences in the Military Prison of Avlona, near Athens.
