Greece: Conscientious objectors in prison for refusing to serve in the army

Imprisonment of eight prisoners of conscience: Giannis Papadimitriou, Nikos Pigounakis, Alexandros Pras, Dimitris Pras, Spyros Vouvakis, Stergios Tsobanidis, Ionathan Andrikopoulos and Giorgos Voulgarakis: The above men were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment on 25 and 26 November 1996 for refusing to perform military service. As Jehovah’s Witnesses they are opposed to performing any kind of military service. As conscientious objectors and prisoners of conscience Amnesty International is calling for their immediate and unconditional release. They are currently serving their sentences in the Military Prison of Avlona, near Athens.
