Greece: Conscientious objectors in prison for refusing to serve in the army

Imprisonment of nine prisoners of conscience: Ilias Diamantis, Michalis Botonakis, Giannis Papadopoulos, Nikos Giannoulis, Kostas Nanos, Errikos-Giorgos Papanikolaou, Christos Sapounas, Antonis Basias, Timotheos Basias: The above men were sentenced to between two and four years’ imprisonment on 26 and 27 November 1996 for refusing to perform military service. As Jehovah’s Witnesses they are opposed to performing any kind of military service. As conscientious objectors and prisoners of conscience Amnesty International is calling for their immediate and unconditional release. They are currently serving their sentences in the Military Prison of Avlona, near Athens.
