United Kingdom: UN report criticizes emergency law practices in Northern Ireland

Amnesty International is concerned about the continuing denial of basic human rights in Northern Ireland, in particular as regards special interrogation centres, access to legal counsel, closed visits, diplock courts and intimidation and harassment of lawyers. It urges the British government to implement the recommendations made in a recent UN report which, among other things, calls for a judicial inquiry into the death of lawyer and human rights activist Patrick Finucane. So far the government has rejected this and several of the other recommendations.
