Enforced disappearances by state agents and abductions by armed groups have been among the most shocking of human rights violations during the second Chechen conflict. The European Court of Human Rights has now issued rulings in several cases concerning enforced disappearances in Chechnya since 1999. The authorities have failed in virtually all cases to investigate and prosecute serious human rights violations. They have also failed to provide redress to the victims. Amnesty International is calling on the Russian federal and Chechen authorities to put a stop to the continuing enforced disappearances and to address impunity for the violations.
