This is a profile of Farid Tukhbatullin, a human rights and ecological activist from Turkmenistan. In March 2003 he was sentenced to three years' imprisonment after an unfair trial, following his attendance of a human rights conference in Moscow. Amnesty International adopted him as a prisoner of conscience. He was released in April 2003 following an international outcry and forced into exile. He now resides in Western Europe where he founded the non-governmental organization Turkmen Initiative for Human Rights.
