Bosnia-Herzegovina: Gross abuses of basic human rights

This report is based on testimonies collected by AI during visits to Croatia, Serbia and Hungary in June and August 1992, covering the period from the outbreak of war in Bosnia to August 1992. It contains many reports of arbitrary detention, torture, ill-treatment and killing of Bosnians, including non-combatants, by Serbian forces in many areas of Bosnia. Similar abuses against Serbs by Bosnian government and Croatian forces are also described. AI has received many reports of rape, which the organization is trying to verify. Many civilians appear to be held for the purpose of exchange and are effectively hostages. AI is also concerned about forcible expulsions (“ethnic cleansing”); the return of refugees from Croatia to Bosnia; and conscientious objectors.
