Croatia: Impunity following the death in custody of Šefik Mujkić

According to reports According to reports Šefik Mujkić, a Croatian citizen of Bosniac (Bosnian Muslim) origin, died as a result of police torture. Two SZUP policemen were found guilty on 8 May 1996 on charges of extracting a confession by force and of causing grievous bodily harm and sentenced to 6 years’ imprisonment. However this verdict was overturned in October 1996 and a retrial was ordered by the Croatian Supreme Court. Since that time no date has been set for a retrial despite repeated appeals by the Mujkic family, and the two defendants continue to remain at liberty.
