Amnesty International’s concerns at the 51st United Nations Commission on Human Rights

This document describes AI’s concerns about a number of countries and issues relevant to the agenda of the forthcoming 51st session of the UN Commission on Human Rights (30 January – 10 March 1995, Geneva). It addresses human rights in countries already on the agenda of the 51st session (Afghanistan, Albania, Bougainville, Cambodia, Cuba, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Georgia, Guatemala, Haiti, the Israeli-Occupied Territories, Iran, Iraq, Myanmar, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Togo, former Yugoslavia and Zaire). Human rights in East Timor, Sri Lanka and Romania were raised in statements by the Chairperson of the last Commission. In addition, the document examines AI’s concerns in Algeria, Colombia, India (Jammu and Kashmir) and Turkey. Other topics include: the thematic mechanisms; international standards (draft optional protocol to the Convention against Torture; draft Declaration on human rights defenders and the third optional protocol to the ICCPR; conscientious objection; mass exoduses; women; and resources for the UN Centre for Human Rights.
