In this statement, Amnesty International focuses on the status of the death penalty in Africa and progress towards its abolition. Among the 53 State Parties to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, 37 states retain the death penalty in their national laws. Amnesty International firmly believes that Africa has the potential to become a region that is free of executions.
