Jordan: Human rights reforms: achievements and obstacles

AI welcomes the progress in human rights reforms and the public emphasis given to human rights by the Jordanian authorities. However, AI is concerned about persisting human rights violations in Jordan. This paper assesses specific human rights reforms, namely: the lifting of the state of emergency; review of ordinary legislation; introduction of the right of appeal; and ratification of international rights treaties. It also discusses violations which are still reported from Jordan, namely: incommunicado detention and torture or ill-treatment; trials by special military courts; increasing use of the death penalty; and expulsion of people to countries where they are at risk of human rights violations.
