Libya: Further information on political detention

This report updates a report published in June 1991, “Libya: Amnesty International’s concerns in the light of recent legal reforms” (MDE 19/02/91). It contains details of 15 prisoners who remained in detention after the March 1988 amnesty and of 15 others arrested after March 1988. AI has details of over 550 political prisoners detained in Libya but the total number of political prisoners may be higher. Some prisoners appear to have been convicted after unfair trials while others are believed to be detained without trial. Several prisoners reportedly have been tortured or ill- treated. Another matter of concern to AI is that prisoners arrested after March 1988 are detained incommunicado. Several are believed to be in poor physical or mental health.
