Medical letter writing action: Saudi Arabia: Abdullah Abbas

Abdullah Abbas, a 39-year-old Ghanaian, is reported to have died on 18 April 1992 after two weeks in detention. He was reportedly arrested in Jeddah as an illegal resident on 2 April, having entered Saudi Arabia in January with a six-week visa. People who saw him in the deportation centre report that he bore signs of ill-treatment by the immigration authorities: his legs and other parts of his body appeared swollen and there were signs of beating. Detainees who helped wash and feed him noted that his physical condition was extremely poor: he was reportedly unable to speak or eat normally. AI is concerned that he may not have received medical care in detention; he was transferred to King Fahd hospital shortly before his death. The cause of death was given as meningitis.
