On 20 March, Hussain Daoud (m), aged 31, a Syrian Kurd who had been in detention since December 2000, was sentenced by the Supreme State Security Court to two years in prison following an unfair trial. Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience detained solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression and association.
