Algeria: Further information: Death penalty: Noureddine Rahmoune, Ahmed Fodhil, Sid Ahmed Lahrani

The death sentences passed on Noureddine Rahmoune and Ahmed Fodil have been confirmed by the Supreme Court in Algeria. Both military personnel, they were sentenced to death in May 1992 by the military court in Bilda for participating in an attack on the Navy headquarters in Algiers in February 1992. The case of the third accused, Sid Ahmed Lahrani, sentenced to death in absentia, has not yet been reviewed. Once upheld by the Supreme Court, death sentences may mot be carried out until a plea for clemency has been rejected by the President. AI is appealing for the sentences to be commuted.
