Morocco Campaign 1991: action and impact

This paper contains information about human rights developments in Morocco during and since AI’s Morocco Campaign, which took place from March to September 1991. It also summarizes activities undertaken by AI Sections and Groups during the campaign. While welcoming the releases of prisoners which took place in 1991, AI continues to have concerns in Morocco, namely: the imprisonment of people for the non-violent expression of their opinions; prolonged garde-a-vue detention, albeit less frequent than before; torture in prisons and detention centres; the failure to clarify the fate of hundreds of “disappeared” Sahrawis and Moroccans; the failure of the Moroccan Government so far to investigate the deaths of about 30 prisoners in Tazmamert detention centre (now closed).
