AI welcomes the positive steps to improve human rights taken by the Moroccan Government during 1991 and 1992; however, AI remains concerned about violations which have apparently continued. Over 600 political prisoners, including prisoners of conscience, are reportedly still in prison, most serving sentences imposed after allegedly unfair trials. Many political detainees, especially those of Western Saharan origin, are still held in garde a vue detention for prolonged periods. Torture in pre-trial detention is still reported and at least five people have died in custody. “Disappeared” prisoners released in 1991 continue to face restrictions and no inquiry into their illegal detention has been held. Some 150 prisoners are reported to be under sentence of death.
