Medical letter writing action: Tunisia: Habib Lassoued

The above-named, a 33-year-old engineer, was arrested on 14 November 1990 and held in garde a vue detention for 26 days (16 days over the 10 day legal maximum). He is alleged to be a supporter of the Islamic movement al- Nahda (Renaissance), which is not recognized by Tunisian law. During garde a vue detention by the police he was allegedly tortured; as result of this treatment he is reportedly suffering from injuries to the legs and vertebral column and to be in generally poor physical condition. At present he is said to be held in solitary confinement and to be denied medical care.
