Medical letter writing action: Republic of Yemen: Death in custody and prison conditions

AI is concerned about the death of Sufyan Hamoud Muhammad ‘Affan in early May 1992. A labourer from Bani Wahban, Ta’iz Province in the former Yemen Arab Republic, he was aged about 35 years and had been in prison for about 10 years. He was a member of the main opposition group in the former YAR, the National Democratic Front. He had been accused of murder and sentenced to death. Sufyan Hamoud Muhammad ‘Affan is reported to have been severely tortured at the time of arrest; in addition, his feet were said to have been shackled during the first 7 years of imprisonment. On 28 February he was admitted to hospital in very poor condition, at the urging of a visiting AI delegation. AI is also concerned about the death in prison of another political prisoner, Mahdi ‘Abdu Haydara al-Salimi
