Torture and other ill-treatment continue to be perpetrated with impunity in Algeria in cases of individuals who are thought to have information about terrorism.
Algerian human rights lawyers Hassiba Boumerdesi and Amine Sidhoum were acquitted of charges of violating laws governing the organization and security of prisons by a court in Algiers on 25 April 2007.
After labelling them as threats to "national security", the UK has recently deported two men to Algeria, a country with a known record of torture and other ill-treatment of people suspected of involvement in terrorism.
