Guadalupe Rivas was born and lives in Mexico City. She graduated from the Engineering School of the National University in México, where she currently works as Project Coordinator, a responsibility that she shares with other private projects as an independent consultant. She has performed different duties within the field of management, both in the educational sector and for private companies, in relation mainly to the use of technology and communication systems.
She chaired the Amnesty International Board of the Mexican Section in the years 1989–1992 and 2001–2003, having other coordination responsibilities within that same board. At the international level, she was Alternate Chair for the International Council Meeting for a number of years. She was also a member of the Standing Committee of Human Information and Financial Matters, from 1993 to 1998. She was elected for a 4 year term as a member of the International Executive Committee. Since September 2011 she holds the post of Vice Chair of the IEC.
