The Chairperson of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy has recommended that the Governor General COMMUTE the death sentences of the 14 prisoners convicted of the murder of former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and others, including those named above who were the subject of UA appeal 265/91. It is understood that the Governor General will act on this recommendation.
The decision to commute the death sentences was announced in a radio broadcast given by the Prime Minister on the evening of 14 August 1991.
According to reports of this broadcast, the Prime Minister said that the measure was being taken in a spirit of reconciliation and that the government had received appeals from churches, human rights groups and people from around the world. The Prime Minister also said that a similar recommendation would soon be made with regard to other prisoners on death row.
Amnesty International wishes to thank all those who sent appeals.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Airmail letters, faxes or telexes should be sent warmly welcoming the Grenadian Government's decision to commute the above death sentences in Grenada.
