Pakistan: The human rights implications of swearing in of General Musharraf as civilian president

As General Pervez Musharraf prepares to be sworn in as civilian president of Pakistan, Amnesty International is concerned about the full circle he's travelled since 1999. He has sought to legitimise his coup and eroded human rights and the systems of accountability that guarantee them. This has occurred over the last eight years -- not just under the current state of emergency.

Amnesty International's Deputy Director for Asia, Tim Parritt, will look at what this means in human rights terms for the future of Pakistan. He is available for interviews should General Musharraf take office, as is widely expected by early next week.
