REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA:A. Novadkis (name previously unknown to Amnesty International)

Amnesty International has learned that a man has been executed in Lithuania for the murder of a 14-year-old girl. The sources of this information is the press agency Baltfax and the Lithuanian newspaper Respublika. The man executed was named by the latter as A. Novadkis, a factory worker who was married. The organization has received no independent confirmation of the identity of the man executed. This is the first execution to have been carried out in Lithuania since restoration of independence in March 1990.

FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express and airmail letters preferably in english, french or german or your own language:

- expressing regret at the recent execution in Lithuania;

- expressing disappointment that the death sentence in this case was not commuted, as has happened in all other cases since restoration of independence in March 1990;

- expressing the view that this execution is a retrograde step when the worldwide trend is moving towards total abolition of the death penalty;

- urging the commutation of any executions pending in the Republic of Lithuania.
