Amnesty International has learned that Adzhik Aliyev, who has been sentenced to death in Tadzhikistan, was represented at his trial in the Supreme Court by a lawyer appointed by his family. The concern raised in the earlier Urgent Action that Adzhik Aliyev's trial may have been unfair because he was not represented during trial proceedings by a lawyer of his own choosing was therefore without foundation.

Amnesty International remains deeply concerned that Adzhik Aliyev has been sentenced to death. It is continuing to call on the authorities in Tadzhikistan not to uphold this death sentence.

FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/faxes/express and airmail letters in Russian, English or in your own language:

- calling on the Chairman of the Supreme Council (parliament) to commute the death sentence passed on Adzhik Aliyev should a petition for clemency come before him;

- calling for commutation of all pending death sentences in Tadzhikistan.
