An Amnesty International delegation visited Turkmenistan on 24-25 October 1992 and obtained information that the death sentence passed on Bayramgeldy CHARYYEV has actually been carried out. No other information about this execution, such as the date when it took place, is currently available.

However, it is believed that the execution did take place in Turkmenistan.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Telegrams/express and airmail letters in Russian or your own language:

- expressing regret that the death penalty was carried out in this case and expressing Amnesty International's unconditional opposition to the use of this form of punishment;

- urging that a moratorium be imposed on death sentences and executions

pending a comprehensive review of use of the death penalty in Turkmenistan.
