EMIRATES (UAE)

O
n 11 June, Salem al-Baloushi was allowed to make a telephone call to his family. The conversation lasted for about 15 minutes during which he asked about his family’s wellbeing. His family thought he sounded as if he was in good health, though he is still being held without charge and without access to lawyers at an unknownlocation.

Salem al-Baloushi was detained in Saudi Arabia without charge or trial from February 2003 until he was handed over to the UAE authorities possibly in April 2005. The reason for his arrest is not known, but it may have been connected to the fact that he had travelled to Afghanistan in the 1980s.
