** United Nations ** - 17 November Pierre Sané is scheduled to meet the Secretary General of the UN, Boutros Boutros Ghali, on 17 November 1993. This will be our first official meeting with Boutros Ghali since he was appointed. We expect Pierre Sané to raise the proposed High Commissioner for Human Rights and AI's political killings campaign. Media are always alerted to Boutros Ghali's diary so there could be some interest in the meeting - we will be preparing a news service item next week.

MALAWI: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL VISIT BREAKTHROUGH
Representatives of Amnesty International are scheduled to visit Malawi from 7 to 18 November. This will be the organization's first permitted visit for many years. After three decades of persistent human rights violations, the move to multi-party democracy after a referendum last June has brought human rights into open public debate within a much-improved human rights situation.
The main purpose of the visit is to meet organizations and individuals in Malawi who are concerned about human rights issues which come within the mandate of Amnesty International. These are expected to include representatives of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and the Public Affairs Committee, law and justice officials, the Malawi Law Society, human rights groups and representatives of religious groups and political organizations.
The delegation consists of Dr Martin Hill and Mr Joseph Gitari from the International Secretariat of Amnesty International in London.
A recent Amnesty International publication entitled MALAWI: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL'S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PERMANENT PROTECTION OF BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS FOLLOWING THE PRO-DEMOCRACY VOTE, (AI INDEX: AFR 36/31/93), will be the basis for discussions with all parties concerned.
