Sierra Leone: Special Court for Sierra Leone: denial of right to appeal and prohibition of amnesties for crimes under international law

This paper discusses The Special Court for Sierra Leone and its mandate to “prosecute persons who bear the greatest responsibility” for war crimes, crimes against humanity, other serious violations of international humanitarian law and certain crimes under Sierra Leone national law committed since 30 November 1996. The paper examines issues which affect the fair and expeditious conduct of proceedings or the outcome of the trials, and the applicability of amnesties and pardons.
