Post September 11th, more than 1,200 non-US nationals were taken into custody in a nationwide sweep for possible suspects; six months on, 300 are believed to remain in Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) detention. Partial data released by the government last November revealed that most were men of Arab or South Asian origin detained for immigration violations. Amnesty International's concerns surround reports of incommunicado detention, harsh custody conditions and a lack of public information on those held.
