John Paul Stevens took his seat as a judge on the US Supreme Court in December 1975 and recently announced his intention to retire. His experience during three decades on the Supreme Court has persuaded him that the death penalty is futile and cruel. David Lee Powell was convicted of the murder of a police officer in May 1978 and is scheduled to be killed in the Texas execution chamber on June 15 2010. Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all cases.
