South Korea: Appeal for the release of Kim Song-man

This appeal calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Kim Song- man, a prisoner of conscience sentenced to life imprisonment on charges under the National Security Law. Kim Song-man was arrested in 1985 and accused of espionage on behalf of North Korea. He was allegedly “mercilessly” tortured during his interrogation. AI believes that he has been detained solely for his political beliefs and that there is no evidence to support the charges of espionage. He is among over 40 political prisoners in Taejon Prison who have refused to sign a statement of “conversion” renouncing their alleged communist belief. Kim Song-man is a Christian but apparently is not permitted to attend Sunday service; he is reported to suffer from poor concentration due to stress.
