In February 2003, Usama Mostafa Hassan Nasr (known as Abu Omar) was on his way to a local mosque when he was abducted from a street in Milan. He was subsequently flown to Egypt where he was detained in secret for fourteen months. He was eventually released in February 2007 and is currently living in Alexandria. Amnesty International has called on the Italian government to provide reparation to Abu Omar and to press the Egyptian authorities to investigate Abu Omar's allegations of torture and other ill-treatment while in detention in Egypt.
