Amnesty International believes Professor Yury Bandazhevsky's conviction is related to his scientific research into the Chernobyl nucleur reactor catastrophe and his open criticism of the state authorities. The organization considers him to be a prisoner of conscience and is calling for his immediate and unconditonal release.
