This paper describes AI's concern about the persistence of torture and ill-treatment of detainees by Israeli security forces. It discusses the interrogation of political detainees, focusing on the use of incommunicado detention. Methods of interrogation and the agencies involved are also discussed. The report examines the legal context in which torture and ill-treatment occur and describes AI's concerns regarding the report of the Landau Commission, which drew up guidelines for the interrogation of political suspects. Two cases typical of alleged torture by the security forces are described ('Abd al-Ra'uf Ghabin and Nader Qumsieh). The report also contains five cases of death in detention, allegedly due to torture and ill-treatment (Mahmud al-Masri, Khaled Shaikh 'Ali, Mustafa 'Akkawi, Mustafa Barakat and Ayman Nasser).
