Demanding dignity for indigenous people in Latin America

As the U2 360° Tour arrives in Latin America this month, with shows in Santiago, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo, Amnesty International's global Demand Dignity campaign will continue to invite fans to campaign against global poverty.

In Argentina we are demanding protection and justice for the Toba Qom indigenous community of La Primavera, in North East Argentina, who have been shot at and their houses burned. Around 100 members of the Toba Qom community have been blocking a national highway in an attempt to reclaim their ancestral territory and protest against the construction of the National University Institute by the Government of Formosa Province, Argentina.

On 23 November, police violently dispersed this roadblock, killing two people and leaving several more injured. Around 30 community members were detained, including children - one young community member remains in prison.

In Brazil we are taking action on behalf of 35 Guarani-Kaiowá Indigenous families of the Laranjeira Ñanderu community, including around 85 children, who are living by the side of a major highway. Evicted from their traditional lands in September 2009, the families' houses were burned down, along with all their belongings. They now live in shacks covered with black plastic, teeming with insects.

The Brazilian authorities' failure to ensure these Indigenous People's land rights has far-reaching consequences. They now have no option but to travel long distances to work in harsh conditions. They are subject to threats and violence and several Indigenous leaders have been killed.

Call on the federal government to prevent further human rights violations and bring to justice those responsible for violence against Indigenous People - take action here.

U2 were awarded Amnesty's prestigious 'Ambassador of Conscience Award' at a ceremony in Santiago, Chile, in 2006 - for their efforts in the cause of global human rights.
