PERU Pamela Huaringa Félix (f)
Her family
Pamela Huaringa Félix is reported to be receiving protection from the authorities, in accordance with her wishes.
Pamela Huaringa Félix has been engaged in legal action against the police officers who allegedly gave her brother, Ricardo Huaringa Félix, a fatal beating in November 2004. She was repeatedly threatened throughout 2005 and 2006. The threats appear to be intended to intimidate her into dropping the case against the police. Ricardo Huaringa Félix was reportedly beaten by two police officers in the street near his house in Lima, while a third police officer prevented neighbours from intervening, saying that Ricardo had been disrespectful to them. He died in hospital as a result of his injuries.
Amnesty International welcomes the measures which have been implemented for the protection of Pamela Huaringa Félix. It is believed that she is no longer in immediate danger. However, the organization will continue to monitor Pamela Huaringa’s situation and campaign for a prompt, impartial and independent investigation into the death threats made against her, with the results to be made public and for those responsible to be brought to justice. Moreover, the organization also continues to call on the authorities to ensure that the killers of Ricardo Huaringa Félix are brought to justice.
Many thanks to all who sent appeals. No further action is required at present.
