The five former student leaders named above were released without charge in the early hours of 11 January. They had been detained since late September 2006.

They were released the day before the UN Security Council voted on a US-drafted resolution on Myanmar, which included a call for the authorities to release political prisoners. The resolution was vetoed by the governments of China and Russia.

No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
