India: New threshold of violence in India, attacks an outrage

The multiple attacks in Mumbai, targeting people in public places and tourist destinations such as a hospital, railway station, restaurant and hotels, blatantly violates the most fundamental principles of international law, said Amnesty International today.

At least 101 people have been killed and a further 280 are thought to have been injured in the attacks. The attacks were unprecedented in their level of coordination and their targeting of foreign civilians.

Amnesty International called on the Indian government to ensure a prompt, effective, and transparent investigation of the incidents. Any suspects should be investigated and brought to trials in line with international standards.

Amnesty International expressed sympathy for the families of those people killed or wounded in the attacks and concern for the fate of remaining hostages.
