International Women’s Day Action 1992 (includes addition: Uganda appeal case)

This report describes five cases of women who have been imprisoned, raped or tortured. In Peru on 25 September 1990 Amanda Guerra Lopez and a girl, aged 15, were reportedly raped by soldiers after the bus they were travelling on was stopped at a checkpoint near the Km 86 base on Federico Basadre Highway. Amanda Guerra remains “disappeared”. Reports of rapes, including gang rapes, of women by soldiers and paramilitaries in India and Uganda have reached AI. One of the Indian victims was reportedly 13. Cherry Mendoza and Cecilia Sanchez, arrested in the Philippines in December 1990, were reportedly sexually abused. Maria Nikolaidou was arrested in Athens in November 1991: the police reportedly hit and abused her although she had told them that she was pregnant.
