Reports of torture and ill-treatment of prisoners and of an apparent pattern of short-term detention and ill-treatment in police custody continue to be of concern to Amnesty International. Cases noted here include the illegal detention and torture during interrogation of prisoners of conscience Anicet Ekane and Henriette Ekwe in February 1990; the arrest and torture of Jean-Jacques Ekindi on 23 September 1991; the detention of some 15 prominent members of newly-formed opposition groups on 24 September 1991, including Samuel Eboua, Charles Tchoungang, Anicet Ekane and Henriette Ekwe, all of whom reported torture by the police.
