Indonesia: Time to face the past: Justice for past abuses in Indonesia’s Aceh province

On 15 August 2005, the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh movement, an armed pro-independence group, signed a historic peace agreement that led to a successful end to 29 years of violence in Aceh. Seven years on, the central government and authorities in Aceh have failed to implement provisions contained in the peace agreement pertaining to truth and justice. It is time for them to respond to demands from victims and their families and ensure that effective measures are taken to secure victims’ rights to truth, justice and reparation
