Oral statement by Amnesty International: Item 10: Activity Reports of Members of the Commission and Special Mechanisms

In this statement Amnesty International addresses the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the state of the death penalty in Africa. The organization opposes the death penalty in all cases without exception. In particular, Amnesty International continues to be very concerned about the resumption of executions in the Gambia and Nigeria in August 2012 and June 2013, respectively. The organization also comments on positive developments where constitutional review processes provide real opportunities to permanently abolish the death penalty.
