Search tips

Searching using the keyword box

To get the best results from your search:

  • Use the country list dropdown to search for content by country.
  • Use the issue list dropdown to search for content by subject.
  • Use the keywords box to search for more specific content e.g. names of individuals or events.
  • Narrow your search by restricting it by date or particular content types.

Terms:

Typing child soldiers into the keyword box will return documents that contain the words "child" and "soldiers".
If you want to return documents that contain either of the words, type child OR soldiers.
If you want to return documents that contain the word child but not "child soldiers" use the minus sign, for example child -"child soldiers".
If you know the AI index number of the report, you can enter it here e.g. AFR 63/001/2008.

Phrases:
To search for a specific term use double quotes e.g. "death penalty".

Term modifiers
Wildcard - child* will return child or children

Searching by region/issue
Drop-down menus allow you to search by country and subject. For example, you can search for documents on Burundi, documents on the death penalty or, if you select both, death penalty issues in Burundi.

The drop-down menus can be combined with keyword, document type and date searches to give much more precise results

Searching by date
Leave the date fields blank to search over all of the content. Enter a date in the From field to restrict your search to documents published on or after that date. Enter a date in the To field to restrict your search to documents published on or before that date.

Searching by document types
There are several document types available on the website. Press releases, stories, audio and video clips, reports, urgent actions are just some of the information types available for you to search over. If you wish to search over all this content, check all four of the boxes. If you wish to limit your search to reports only, uncheck the other three boxes. Public statements, newsletters, web stories, appeals for action and other forms of public information can be found using the box labelled "other".
